Humidity in Oil

Monitoring of crucial oil systems

In systems relying on an oils performance, monitoring the relative moisture content/ water activity, is a key indicator of an oil's condition. By using an online monitoring system with a built-in SHT4xI-Digital sensor, the risk of contamination during oil sampling can be reduced, and downtime can be minimized. This can lead to improved system performance and reduced maintenance costs.

Transformers

In an oil insulated transformer, oil is a crucial component as it helps with heat dissipation and electrical insulation. Transformer oil is designed to withstand high voltage stresses. Increased water activity risks electrical discharge and can therefore lead to total failure of a transformer.

Hydraulics

Hydraulic oil is designed to withstand high pressure and temperatures. An increase in water activity can have several negative impacts such as corrosion or changes in the viscosity of the oil. This could not only lead to a less efficient power transmission but also damage the hydraulic system components.

Lubricants

Water activity does not have a direct effect on the properties of lubricant oil. However, water contamination in a lubricant oil system can contribute to rust, corrosion, and other mechanical problems. It is important to ensure that lubricant oil is kept clean and dry to prevent these issues which could lead to increased friction and thus faster worn-out parts.
