Subcutaneous drug delivery

Miniaturized liquid flow sensors inside large-volume injectors monitor and track drug delivery

Large volume injectors (LVIs) are wearable devices that enable continuous subcutaneous drug delivery. They are intended to replace conventional intravenous drug delivery for certain therapies.

Therapies using intravenous injections require patients to go to the hospital, preventing them from working or doing other daily activities. They also demand the presence and effort of the clinical staff, therefore generating costs. Large volume injectors improve patient comfort, reduce pressure on clinical staff, and save costs. Some LVIs require precise dosing of the drug delivered, which in turn requires the pump to be controlled by a flow sensor. Moreover, bubble, empty lines and occlusion detection are desirable for an improved patient safety and a better compliance.

Our miniaturized liquid flow platform provides accurate flow measurement in the desirable therapy range, uses biocompatible materials, and offers air-in-line alarms.

How our sensors make a difference

Wide range of drugs thanks to a compact and modular sensor platform

Thanks to the modularity of our liquid flow platform, flow range, housing size and interfaces are adjustable depending on the drug type, concentration, and viscosity while keeping the system as compact as possible.

Improved efficacy with precise dosing in the range of ul/min to ml/min

For doses that are critical to the patient, precise measurement of the drug delivered is crucial. Our miniaturized flow sensors measure flow with the highest accuracy, allow constant monitoring of the drug delivery and offer precise feedback to control the pump.

Increased therapy safety through failure detection

The liquid flow platform is designed to detect malfunctions such as open flow, occlusions or air-in-line, which supports the patient, improves their journey, and maximizes the benefits of the therapy.

LVIs replace conventional intravenous infusion with wearable, subcutaneous injection devices. These allow patients to receive controlled doses of medication – automatically, continuously, and with minimal disruption to their daily lives. Our miniaturized fluid flow platform provides crucial control of flow rates and accurate monitoring of failures.

Why Sensirion should be part of your solution

Miniaturized flow sensors

Thanks to the small size of our liquid flow platform it can be easily integrated in wearable devices without impacting the physical and social comfort of the patient.

Robust solutions

Since our sensors never need to be calibrated in the field and withstand harsh conditions, they are perfect for wearable devices such as LVIs.

Overcoming challenges

With our over 25 years of experience in flow sensing and in embedding sensors in medical devices, we know about many challenges in drug delivery and how to overcome them.
